Controllable flow regulator
Our controllable flow regulator gives you intelligent remote control of the outflow in your climate adaptation project. Take full control of water volumes and optimise your installation's capacity based on real-time data and weather forecasts. It also acts as a shut-off valve, fully closing the outflow when needed.
The controllable flow regulator is patented (Danish Patent No. 182007).
Remote control
Control the outflow rate directly from the platform and adapt it to changing conditions
Weather-based control
Automatic adjustment of outflow based on weather forecasts
Intelligent monitoring
Continuous monitoring of water level and automatic alerts at critical thresholds
Full control in any climate adaptation project
Our patented controllable flow regulator is an innovative, functional solution that delivers full control over the water balance in climate adaptation projects. Among other things, it can hold back all stormwater in a system, then either release it slowly to the receiving body when downstream capacity is available, or save it as a valuable resource — for example to irrigate urban planting or cool ambient temperatures.
Intelligent control
The controllable flow regulator is paired with our water level sensor and platform, giving operators precise control of water release. You can decide exactly when and how much of the captured stormwater should be released.
Proactive operation
The system is connected to weather forecasts, so the controllable flow regulator can be set to react proactively and automatically empty an installation ahead of a forecast cloudburst. The system is then ready to absorb large volumes of new rainfall before it falls.
Flexible control and shut-off
For example, you can set a reuse policy that releases a specific volume over a number of days after a rainfall event while still retaining enough water for irrigation. The regulator also acts as a shut-off valve, closing the outflow completely for maximum control. It is fitted with adjustable overflows and manual override controls so it can also be operated directly from the manhole.

Examples of the controllable flow regulator in action
Figure 1
On 12 July 2024, a 100-year rainfall event was forecast. We pre-emptively emptied the installation so the climate adaptation project would be ready for the event. The graph shows that despite the warning, only 11 mm of rain actually fell.
This is an example of how the controllable flow regulator gives full control over both emptying and retention. The graph also shows how a signal from SmartBrønd's water level sensor can automate critical parts of operations.
Figure 2
The graph shows water being drawn off continuously from a climate adaptation project. From 26 to 29 August 2024, around 12 m³ of stormwater was tapped to irrigate the city's trees.
This shows how the controllable flow regulator retains large volumes of water over time, and how SmartBrønd's platform makes a wide range of useful data immediately available.
